If you haven’t been to our copiccommunity.com gallery yet then check it out. Recently Illustrator Angie Hoffmeister submitted some work. I followed the linkage and spent a good 20 minutes scrolling through her tumblr and digging her moleskin drawings. She has got some serious skills. Her color palette is very well defined and I love that so many of her figures seem to have freckles. From what I gather the above images uses Copic’s and watercolors. Very nicely done. I looked through my files as I remembered she had submitted this little gem below sometime last year for our old gallery. I remember looking at it for a long time. A lot of nice detail.

CF Payne is now online

August 13, 2009 : 8:52 am by Courtney

If haven’t heard of him, C.F. Payne is one of the most well known and prolific of contemporary American illustrators. When I was in design school illustration classes we used to pour over his Time covers and entries into American Society of Illustrator Annuals. Check his work out. It will be worth your time. I promise.

Fly with the Spaceship

: 2:35 pm by Courtney

This was sent to me via our Myspace page by one of the artists behind the film. It comes from the Baden-Wurremburg, Germany based design studio Fly with the Spaceship. Great combined use of technology and traditional media. Their website has some cool typefaces for free download and at least one of them makes some really cool electronica music. Busy guys.

UPDATE:
Artist Enormal sent me a brief note describing the video:

“There is nothing special to say about DOUBLE SESSION except that it was pure improvisation, and we were freestylin for maybe 2 hours. and then [sped up the film]….
I’m drawing in front while Chrispy Christal is in the back, kicking some styles and shapes in illustrator, thats it :)

Mark Todd Mini Zine – Altered Comic Covers

Illustrator Mark Todd currently has a limited edition mini-zine available for sale on his site. As he describes it: “This is a collection of some of the altered comic cover pieces I have created over the past four years.” I need one for the office. It looks so great.

Also check out the rest of Todd’s art. He’s done work for Mtv, Coca-Cola, Sony Music, The New Yorker… the list goes on. Here are a couple of my favorites from his portfolio:

1000 Journals Project

July 17, 2009 : 11:37 am by Courtney

If you haven’t heard about the 1000 Journals Project then you really should check out their site. I’ve had this book sitting on my desk for months and pick it up all the time for inspiration or just a quick visual break. It is a great reminder of the flexible nature of visual communication. Everyone has their own approach to mark making, drawing or doodling. There is a great deal of mixed media/ collage work in here as well. Makes me want to get up from the computer and go to my drawing table with nothing but a pile of old magazines, a glue stick and my favorite drawing tool.

1001-1

1001-2

1001-3

From their about page;

The 1000 Journals Project is an ongoing collaborative experiment attempting to follow 1000 journals throughout their travels. The goal is to provide a method for interaction and shared creativity among friends and strangers.

How it Works:

Those who find the journals add something to them. A story, drawing, photograph, anything really. Then they pass the journal along, to a friend or stranger, and the adventure continues.

It has become pretty popular and so it may be difficult to get a hold of a journal to add to. Nevertheless, their FAQ page provides insight on how to be a part of it. Or you can get involved in the 1001 project, an extention which aims to provide more people with a chance to make art with others.
